MD|DC Credit Union Association Celebrates 20 Years of Unifying, Strengthening Regional Credit Unions with Anniversary Video
At its annual convention, CONNECT 2025, the MD|DC Credit Union Association proudly marked its 20th anniversary, reflecting on a journey that began with a pivotal decision in 2005. That year, the boards of the Maryland and DC Credit Union Leagues made history by voting to merge, successfully establishing the nation’s first unified, regional credit union association with a shared vision of building a stronger, more unified organization for long-term credit union success. The Association advocates for credit unions in Maryland, Delaware and the Washington Metro Area.
“For 20 years, the MD|DC Credit Union Association has been a catalyst for credit union success, building connections with members, policymakers, business partners and community organizations,” said John Bratsakis, President/CEO of the MD|DC Credit Union Association. “Our foundation is, and always has been, built on strong relationships and collaborative opportunities that help our credit unions to grow and thrive.”
Celebrating two decades of impact, the MD|DC Credit Union Association unveiled a special video at the convention on June 16. Credit union leaders across the region shared compelling testimonials about the Association’s impact:
“To have a partner that’s there no matter what time of day, no matter what’s happening, no matter what the issue is, it really gives you a sense of confidence,” said Dan McCarthy, President/CEO of Del-One FCU. John Hamilton, President/CEO of MECU Credit Union, echoed this sentiment, stating, “The Association is a resource we cannot afford to be without.”
The critical support provided by the Association during challenging times was also highlighted. Dave Sweiderk, President/CEO of SECU of Maryland, recalled, “The Association truly had our back throughout the pandemic. From a communications standpoint, they were the backbone, ensuring we pulled together and made a difference across the state.”
The Association’s commitment to long-term sustainability and leadership development was also recognized. Miguel Boluda, President/CEO of PAHO/WHO Federal Credit Union, emphasized, “How do credit unions remain viable and consistent over the next 75 to 100 years? That’s really going to be making sure that we have a strong bench of future leaders. The Association is very focused on that.”
