SkyPoint FCU Empowers Local Family on PBS Series Opportunity Knock$

SkyPoint FCU is featured in season two of the award-winning PBS series, Opportunity Knock$. A screening was hosted Wednesday in DC. The new season begins airing in May and highlights SkyPoint’s dedication to empowering families in the community to achieve financial stability.

Screening of Opportunity Knock$

Opportunity Knock$ follows families struggling with debt as they embark on a journey towards financial independence. The program connects viewers facing similar challenges with valuable coaching and financial services, fostering financial resilience within communities.

As the sole designated Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) in Montgomery County, SkyPoint FCU was chosen for its commitment to supporting its members and the community.

SkyPoint FCU CEO Carla Decker shared how the credit union helps members achieve their financial goals. “Every day, we welcome members from our diverse communities, meeting them wherever they are in their financial journeys, including those who need help navigating the financial system and understanding their options. We hope viewers of the show will realize they are not alone; they can gain their financial footing and establish a plan for their financial future through their local CDFI credit union.”

The local family featured on the episode faced significant credit card debt exceeding $100,000, all while supporting their son’s college education. SkyPoint FCU provided a lifeline by refinancing their loan at a significantly lower interest rate, reducing their monthly payment from $3,500 to a more manageable $1,200.

Financial journalist Jean Chatzky, who serves as one of the financial coaches on the show spoke at the event, along with DC Department of Insurance, Securities and Banking Commissioner Karima Woods. MD|DC Credit Union Association President and CEO John Bratsakis, Association Chair and EVP/COO of Educational Systems FCU Laura Eacho, and Credit Union Foundation MD|DC Director Leigh Philibosian attended as well.

To view the episode, tune in to WETA Metro on Saturday, May 4th at 5:30 pm or the flagship WETA station on Sunday, May 5th at 10:00 am.
