Maryland’s largest credit union raised $15,086 for the 2020 Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge in support of Special Olympics Maryland. Twenty-six SECU employees volunteered to plunge into the icy cold Chesapeake Bay as part of the Corporate Plunge on January 24.

Each year, local businesses in Maryland come together for the Corporate Plunge to raise funds for Special Olympics Maryland, which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This was SECU’s first year participating in the Corporate Plunge and employees have already committed to signing up again next year.

This event is part of an ongoing partnership between SECU and Special Olympics Maryland to provide support for the organization’s many programs which help athletes develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and build community. SECU sponsored the 2019 Special Olympics Opening Ceremony and will continue its work with Special Olympics throughout the year.

“Here at SECU, we are committed to strengthening and enriching the lives of our neighbors in the communities where our employees live and work,” said Dave Sweiderk, President and CEO of SECU. “We look to align with organizations that share our vision and values, and Special Olympics Maryland is an organization that does just that. We’re thrilled to partner with them to help create a world where opportunity is not limited by disability.” Sweiderk recently became a board member of Special Olympics Maryland where he works to create partnerships in line with Special Olympics’ goals.
