Miriam Rivera Lieb Emerging Leader Award


Nominations will be accepted through March 19, 2018 for the Emerging Leader Award, which honors the legacy of credit union leader and advocate Miriam Rivera Lieb. “Mimi” as she was known, served credit unions for more than three decades before retiring in 2007 after 24 years as CEO of Transportation Federal Credit Union.  She believed that credit unions should reflect the core principles of the movement -- people helping people, and she embodied those principals in her service to the movement and as a mentor to other credit union leaders. The Emerging Leader Award recognizes a next generation credit union leader who shares Mimi’s dedication to making a difference in peoples’ lives, and has demonstrated the potential to be a leader.

Nominees must be young professionals under the age of 40, employed by a credit union that is a member of the MD|DC Credit Union Association. Nominees will compete for a professional development package, sponsored by CUNA Mutual Group, worth up to $5,000:

  • Executive coaching – 3, one-hour sessions
  • Conference scholarship (choice of select CUNA Conference or MD|DC Credit Union Association’s Annual Conference)
  • Airfare and accommodations to visit CUNA and CUNA Mutual Group headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin
  • Ad Hoc member of the MD|DC Credit Union Association board of directors (one year)
  • Lunch with CUNA president/CEO Jim Nussle and MD|DC Credit Union Association president/CEO John Bratsakis
  • Attend an Advocacy meeting with a member of the Maryland or D.C. Congressional delegation
  • Lunch with the Chapter Board of the award recipient’s credit union 
  • Shadow a credit union leader for a day (CEO or executive level)

Nominees will answer the question: How can credit unions better position themselves as the best financial choice for consumers? Written and video submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges and posted online for voting.

Finalists will present their ideas during the Association’s Annual Meeting & Convention June 5, 2018 in Ocean City, Md.

Competition Phases

Nomination phase: February 19 – March 19
Eligible young professionals may apply by completing a nomination application describing their role in their credit union, professional accomplishments and what distinguishes them as an Emerging Leader. They must also submit a 2-3 minute, original video in which they pitch an innovative idea or program that addresses: How can credit unions better position themselves as the best financial choice for consumers?

Selection Phase: March 20 – April 1
A panel of judges will evaluate written and video applications submitted. The results will be tabulated and the top nominees (up to 5) will be named as Finalists. Finalists will be notified by email and announced on the website ( on or about April 1, 2018.

Online voting phase: April 2 – May 4
Videos of the top nominees (up to 5) will be posted online, allowing the public and credit unions to vote for their favorite nominee.

Final presentation phase: June 5, 2018
Finalists will present their ideas during the Association’s annual business meeting in Ocean City, Maryland. Attendees will vote on the presentations and a winner will be decided based on a combination of online voting, judges’ evaluations and votes cast by conference attendees.
