General Keith B. Alexander, Commander of U.S. Cyber Command and Director, National Security Agency/Chief, Central Security Service, was awarded the Baltimore Washington Corridor Chamber's Freeman Hrabowski Visionary Leadership Award at the BWCC's 66th Annual Meeting, held April 25, 2013 at Martin's Crosswinds in Greenbelt, Md. Dr. Hrabowski, President of UMBC and one of Time Magazine's 2012 "100 Most Influential People," presented the award.
Hrabowski lauded General Alexander for his "ability, at the highest levels of government and the military community, to effectively and powerfully articulate the need for our Nation's cyber defense." He applauded the General's support of educational programs at all levels in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines, noting that more than 1,000 UMBC graduates are now employed at NSA.
General Alexander delivered the meeting's keynote speech, which focused on cybersecurity. "The Internet began in America," he says, "and our world is bound together by the communication highway. It's a wonderful time, but the challenge in cybersecurity is protecting our country's intellectual property, which is being stolen from us." He continued, "[America] is being attacked in cyberspace—and [hackers] are not just stealing, they are destructing." Alexander called for more education about cybersecurity and an investment in a cybersecurity workforce. "What [America] needs most is to train and educate people in the area of cybersecurity, and to invest in our children and their education."
The annual meeting also included a presentation of the BWCC's inaugural Business Hall of Fame inductees, recognition of BWCC board members and staff, and election of BWCC directors. News anchor Leon Harris from ABC7/WJLA-TV was the Master of Ceremonies.
Long-time BWCCmemberTower Federal Credit Union was the lead event sponsor.
"Congratulations to General Alexander on his well-deserved visionary award. We are proud to sponsor the BWCC Annual Meeting," says Martin Breland, Tower's President and CEO. "For 60 years, Tower has served the financial needs of NSA employees and in many ways, has grown up alongside the NSA. We know the importance of having the right interconnected cybersecurity tools and technologies in place to protect members' sensitive financial information and prevent security breaches."
