Baltimore-area banks and credit unions are extending help to furloughed federal government workers, including short-term loans and letting them tap certificates of deposits early.
The assistance banks and credit unions are extending to workers affected by the shutdown reflects the increased competition between them for both consumer and commercial customers. Several area credit unions are stepping up their commercial lending, an area that until recently had mostly been the province of banks.
