Maryland Credit Unions Unite to Support Johns Hopkins Children’s Center

Mon, Oct 7, 2013

Columbia , Maryland

Credit union officials presented a $35,187 check to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center today, the result of collaborative fundraising through the 2013 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run® and other activities. The credit unions and partner organizations include APG FCU; the Credit Union Foundation of MD & DC; Destinations CU; the MD|DC Credit Union Association; MECU; Johns Hopkins FCU; and SECU.

“We are proud of the remarkable collaboration of fundraising accomplishments of our Maryland credit unions,” said John Bratsakis, president/CEO of the MD|DC Credit Union Association. “This check represents the caring power of credit unions throughout their members’ communities,” he continued. “Our commitment to the community and to the children of the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is motivation enough to run those 10 miles and beyond.”

“The money raised goes directly to helping our patients and families in many different ways, including helping us purchase special equipment that insurance does not provide, funding emergency needs and support for families and funding activities and things to do while in the hospital.  You help allow our kids to still be kids while they are in the hospital and give them a little piece of normalcy in a place that is anything but,” said Cynthia Palacz, Associate Director of Development at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

The flagship Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run® in Washington, D.C. is a part of a Family of Races sponsored by Credit Union Miracle Day (CUMD) benefiting Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals through Credit Unions for Kids. Other races include the Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run in Sacramento, Calif., and two Freedom Runs for American troops overseas (Camp Arifjan, Kuwait and  Wiesbaden Army Garrison, Germany) all held on or around the same day. In 12 years, the Family of Races has donated over $6 million to CMN Hospitals.

Participating credit unions also send hundreds of volunteers to help at the races.

In 2013, 161 Members of Congress signed up to serve as Honorary Cherry Blossom Race Chairs, including the two U.S. Senators, and three members of the U.S. House of Representatives, from Maryland.

The 2013 Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run and Credit Union SacTown Ten-Mile Run drew together 100 credit unions from 14 states, 60 business partner organizations, 16‚000 runners and over 700 volunteers, and raised over $511,000 for CMN Hospitals nationwide.
