CUNA is hosting a webinar on Wednesday, March 21, 3-4 p.m. on strategies for managing legal issues related to remote capture deposit (RDC) technology. Some credit unions have received letters from a law firm inviting them to negotiate a patent licensing deal with USAA for the continued usage of remote deposit capture (RDC) technology. According to the letter, USAA was the first to develop and patent RDC technology, and the patent licensing campaign is an effort to recover “a small and fair portion” of the value USAA has provided to the financial services industry. During last month’s Hot Topics webinar hosted by the MD|DC Credit Union Association, attorney Andy Kenney, with Kaufman & Canoles, outlined key steps credit unions can take if a letter is received regarding RDC:
- Contact your third party vendor; in most cases they indemnify the credit union for any claims.
- Contact your insurer to discuss.
