Applications and Research Laboratory teacher Maddy Halbach, PhD. has been named one of seven 2017/18 Maryland Teacher of the Year finalists. Dr. Halbach has served as a Millionaire's Club Advisor since 2011.
Halbach said she's pleased to have such an "amazing group of kids" in the finance program and looks forward to each day in the classroom.
Financial literacy is crucial to children's education, helping them make "good educated decisions," Halbach said. Students can then apply this knowledge when making decisions about where they want to go to college and how much they're willing to pay for school, she said.
Once a winner is selected, the state Teacher of the Year will compete for the National Teacher of the Year award, which will be announced in April.
"I'm incredibly honored and amazed that I'm in that category," Halbach said.
Dr. Halbach appears in the Millionaire's Club short film featured at MillionairesClub.Org. The high school financial education experience is offered at no charge for schools and credit union sponsors via the site.
Dr. Halbach's Millionaire's Club has thrice earned the "Millionaire's Club of the Year" trophy and her Millionaire's Club members have placed first in the Maryland Personal Finance Challenge five of the past five years and have earned the national title three of the past five years.
