JHFCU staff joined volunteers to build a playground at the new community park in East Baltimore.
The event which began with three pre-build days on June 7th, culminated in a family-fun event on Saturday, June 10th. On that day, JHFCU staff and family members rallied alongside over 300 volunteers to build a fun and innovative play space for the children of East Baltimore.
JHFCU employee, Julia Brunner’s husband Greg Brunner of Big Hit Productions donated his time as DJ and energized volunteers with upbeat tunes. Credit Union employee Rachel Hill also supplied tents, a bubble machine and chalkboards for the Kid Zone.
In addition to the $5,000 JHFCU contributed to the build, employees Connie Miller and Lakeyna Henderson raised an additional $460 by selling candy bars to employees and members. They then used the funds to sponsor a professional face painter and balloon twister.
Henderson says she participated in the event because, “Going to the playground was something my friends and I loved to do as a kid. It’s something you don’t see much of anymore. I feel that children should have a fun and safe place to play outdoors.”
Miller agrees. “When my sister passed away years ago, my Mom always made sure my nephews participated in outdoor activities via the park and playground. It meant a lot to them. I would do anything to give back to the kids.”
