The two local credit unions serving Aberdeen Proving Ground are encouraging military personnel and their families to participate in Military Saves Week, February 27 to March 4, 2017. The effort by the Department of Defense is an annual opportunity for individuals to assess their savings and take financial action. Each year, service members and military families are encouraged to set a goal, make a plan and save automatically to meet their goals.
APG Federal Credit Union and Freedom Federal Credit Union, two local Harford County credit unions that specifically serve APG and other area military personnel, are participating with the program. During Military Saves Week, each credit union will match deposits of up to $50 for new savings accounts and $25 for new youth accounts. This offer is available to all Department of Defense employees, contractors, active duty, reserve, National Guard and retired military personnel and their family members who open a new savings account and set up an automatic savings plan. Individuals are encouraged to assess their savings annually to make sure their savings priorities are on the right track and to help plan for the future. A “saver checklist” will be provided to help determine savings preparedness and savings accomplishments can be checked to evaluate where savings habits need to be strengthened to help meet future goals.
Military participants are asked to take a savings pledge, to set a goal, make a plan and save automatically. Data shows that people with a savings plan are two times more likely to save for emergencies and retirement than those without one. More than 250,000 military personnel and their family members have already committed to save. They are aided by text message tips and reminders to help with their goals. A photo contest is also planned for Military Saves Week. Participants can create a selfie or video that shows what they are saving for and post it to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. See www.AmericaSavesWeek.org to learn more about contest entry details and prizes, as well as social media events and activities.
