We're looking for a few good men and women to volunteer for the Credit Union Financial Reality Fair on Tuesday, April 18, 9:30am - 12:30 pm in Washington, DC. The fair is sponsored by the DC Chapter of the MD|DC Credit Union Association and is being held at the Metropolitan Police Department's Youth and Family Services Division.
The Financial Reality Fair provides high school participants with the opportunity to simulate responsible adult spending, budgeting and money management as if they were living on their own. The event gives participants an interactive, hands-on experience with balancing a budget and living within their disposable monthly net income while paying for basic needs such as housing, utilities, transportation, food and other living essentials. The fair teaches basic money management skills that are key to economic and career success.
Volunteers are critical to the success of the program as they are needed to encourage students to spend for essential needs and wants. Volunteers help to disseminate information about the products and services at each consumer booth. Other volunteers (financial counselors) assist students at the end of the event, explaining to the students the pitfalls to avoid, ensuring that they have enough disposable income to live on each month. It is a fun and engaging way to highlight the importance of spending and saving habits.
