The 115th Congress got underway last Tuesday as members were sworn in, including three new members of the Maryland delegation who were supported by the Association. The Association’s Advocacy team, led by MD|DC President & CEO John Bratsakis, attended the swearing-in ceremonies and receptions for U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen and Representatives Jamie Raskin and Anthony Brown.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen hosted an event at Union Station and was accompanied by new Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, who gave an impromptu stump speech to hundreds of supporters and on-lookers. The Advocacy team later had an opportunity to speak with Sen. Van Hollen who thanked John and the Association for its ongoing and continued support of his campaigns.
The team also attended the swearing-in ceremonies and receptions that followed at the Library of Congress for Rep. Jamie Raskin and Rep. Anthony Brown and had a chance to speak directly to them about credit union issues. Rep. Brown was ceremonially sworn in again in front of his supporters by Minority Whip and Maryland’s senior member Rep. Steny Hoyer. Before the reception ended, Brown excused himself to head back to the floor of the House to vote. So it begins.
District Council and MD General Assembly
Last week, members of the District of Columbia Council also took the oath and were sworn in for Council Period 22. New members include former mayor Vincent Gray (Ward 7) and Trayon White, Sr. (Ward 8). The other new ‘at-large’ member is Robert White, Jr.
This morning, the Association is conducting meetings with the new mambers of the DC City Council in preparation for the upcoming session.
On Wednesday, January 11, the trifecta will be complete as the Maryland General Assembly begins its 90-day legislative session.
