Tower Federal Credit Union members Kathleen Hupfeld of Columbia, Md. and Connor Gilbert of Annapolis, Md., each won $1,000 scholarship awards for their winning essays during the 2013 Scholarship Awards Program, sponsored by the Credit Union Foundation of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Tower surprised each winner by matching their awards with an additional $1,000, and also donated $2,000 to the Credit Union Foundation to benefit future scholarship programs.
The winners and their families were invited to a Tower branch of their choice for a presentation of their checks. “Thank you for your support of my college education and for the additional gift. It was quite a surprise to find the extra check from Tower in the envelope I received,” said Gilbert, who opted to receive his award by mail due to a conflict of schedule with summer work hours.
Sally Murphy, Branch Manager for Tower’s Clarksville branch, was on hand to present the award to HupfeId on June 20. “I am especially proud of our college-bound members who take the initiative to express their thoughts and ideas in the form of creative essays in an effort to win money to help defray the cost of college,” said Murphy.
Kyle Swisher, Executive Director of the Credit Union Foundation, also attended the presentation and appreciated the surprise donation from Tower. The Foundation awarded 11 $1,000 scholarships in this year’s competition. The Scholarship Awards Program is made possible by generous donors to The Credit Union Foundation.
This year’s theme for the annual essay and video contest was: “You know that personal financial education is important. How can your credit union help you become financially literate?” Of the 319 essays submitted, 40 of them were from Tower members, the highest number of member participation from one credit union.
