CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference Registration Open

Credit Union National Association has announced that the 2017 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference will be held February 26 to March 2 in Washington, D.C. Serving as the largest advocacy event in the credit union movement, CUNA GAC unites thousands of credit union advocates to fight for fairer legislation, regulation and policies for credit unions.

“CUNA GAC is a rare opportunity for credit unions to fully embrace their cooperative spirit and unite on an industry-wide level to advocate for political change,” said John Bratsakis, president and CEO of the MD|DC Credit Union Association. “We strongly encourage Maryland & DC credit unions to be a part of this monumental event and remind lawmakers of the invaluable service our movement provides.”

“CUNA GAC unites credit unions around our powerful cause,” said CUNA President and CEO Jim Nussle. “It’s a great conference and networking event. It’s our time to bring our message to Washington, D.C. Credit unions are different, and we make a difference for our more than 100 million members and their communities.”

Hill Hikes, coordinated together with the state credit union leagues, are at the heart of CUNA GAC. Credit union representatives from all 50 states visit Capitol Hill to meet with their representatives, start conversations on pivotal legislative and regulatory issues, and remind them of the benefit credit unions have on their constituents’ lives.

CUNA GAC also features:

  • Keynote sessions from business, media and politics
  • Breakout sessions on important regulatory and advocacy topics
  • Touring the largest exhibit hall of any credit union event
  • Networking with fellow industry leaders
The 2017 Crash the GAC is an event that you don’t want to miss. The Cooperative Trust, CUNA, and state leagues/associations are joining forces in an attempt to get one Crasher from each state and the District of Columbia represented at this year’s GAC.
 
This year, there will also be a “wildcard” spot for a 52nd Crasher to attend. Every Crasher will receive a full conference registration from CUNA. Travel, hotel and food costs are the responsibility of the Crasher and their credit union. Some scholarships and assistance may be available.

Journalistic legend Bob Schieffer will deliver the keynote address at the closing general session of CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference, to be held February 26-March 2, 2017 in Washington D.C.

“Politics is ultimately the focus of GAC, and no one knows politics better than Bob Schieffer,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “Bob’s insider perspective on beltway culture will arm the thousands of advocates in attendance invaluable insight as they Hike the Hill that week to meet with lawmakers and advocate for credit union interests.”

Schieffer has more than 58 years of experience as a reporter, 46 of them with CBS News. He is particularly well-known as the host of the Sunday morning show “Face the Nation,” which he led to its highest ratings in decades. He has interviewed every U.S. president since Richard Nixon, moderated three presidential debates and authored three books including 2008’s “Bob Schieffer’s America.”

Named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress, Schieffer currently serves as the Walter Shorenstein Media and Democracy Fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. CUNA GAC attendees will value his experience, expertise and firsthand knowledge on the inner-workings of Washington in his presentation, “Political Outlook from a Political Insider.”
