Columbia, Maryland

Today, there are nearly 2.2 million people in Maryland, the District and across the region that are members of credit unions.  We live and work in virtually every town and community from Maryland’s eastern shore thru Baltimore to points S.E. and N.W. in the District.  We know that our credit unions continue to serve the financial needs of our members through savings and checking, business lending, mortgages, and community involvement. But we need to do a better job in getting that news out, especially with our elected representatives, locally and on Capitol Hill.

Did you know that Rep. Elijah Cummings represents the Inner Harbor, Baltimore and approximately 175,000 CU members across his Congressional district? Rep. Andy Harris represents St. Michael’s, Eastern Shore and approx. 135,000 CU members.  Rep. Steny Hoyer, represents the Bowie Baysocks, PG County and over 100,000 CU members. These are numbers that our representatives in Congress need to know!   But first, we need to know a little bit more from members to convey this important information on Capitol Hill.

CUNA has a simple program in place named Project Zip Code (PZC), in which credit unions can quickly and securely upload member zip code information (no member names, personal or financial information is uploaded) to help determine an exact number of members who reside in each Congressional and local district. This will give our Association and CUNA the ability to very accurately let a Congressional office know (including our reps in Annapolis and District) the CU members in their respective districts.

This advocacy information is an extremely important message point for elected officials and staff to hear and understand. CU member-constituents vote…and Members of Congress can count!  Please review the link to PZC and participate. It will take your IT professional less than 10 minutes to complete the process. The Advocacy team will be happy to walk through the process with you or your IT rep to complete. Get with the program…Zip it Up!
