Maryland State Senate Majority Leader Rob Garagiola (D – District 15) announced his intention to resign his seat on September 1. Garagiola made the announcement on June 5, and cited his desire to spend more time with his children (he is a single father to 3 children aged 12,13, and 15) as the main reason for his planned departure from the State Senate. While stating that he has no plans to run for any other elected office, the Montgomery County Democrat did not close the door on any future run at elected office. Garagiola has served in the State Senate since 2003, and lost a difficult Democratic primary for the U.S. House of Representatives to Congressman John Delaney (D – MD 6) last year. Delaney went on to defeat former-Congressman Roscoe Bartlett in the general election back in November.
