Advanced IRAs

 Advanced IRAs builds on the attendees’ knowledge of IRA basics to address some of the more complex IRA issues their financial organizations may handle. This is an advanced session; previous IRA knowledge is assumed. The instructor uses real-world exercises to help participants apply information to job-related situations .

Amendment Issues

  • Recognize amendment requirements and procedures
  • Describe a catch-all amendment

Resolving Contribution Issues

  • Identify the difference between an true excess and a deemed excess
  • Explain the deadline to correct an excess contribution
  • Calculate net income attributable (NIA) and describe the methods for correcting an excess contribution

Advanced Portability

  • Explain the restrictions on the movement between IRAs and the result of violating the portability restrictions
  • Recognize the options available when moving from an employer-sponsored retirement plan to an IRA
  • Describe a conversion, a reconversion, and the consequences of an ineligible conversion

RMD and Beneficiary Issues

  • Calculate a required minimum distribution (RMD)
  • Discuss the RMD rules and reporting requirements
  • Describe beneficiary distribution options and deadlines


  • Explain the withholding notice and election requirements
  • Recognize when withholding is mandatory, how it is reported, and what penalties may apply

  • an IRA administrator, personal banker, or member services personnel who has a working knowledge of basic IRA operations and wishes to expand your expertise and provide enhanced customer service;
  • a financial professional who recognizes that IRAs play an integral role in retirement planning;
  • a compliance specialist with procedural oversight of IRA policies and practices; or
  • support personnel responsible for promotional materials that describe the services provided by your financial organization.



Chad Neumann is a training consultant for Ascensus, Inc. He is responsible for conducting IRA training programs to meet the needs of financial institutions nationwide.  Chad is the Project Manager for IRA Supertrain®.  He is responsible for the evaluation, analysis, design, development, and delivery of IRA Supertrain each year. He also participates on numerous project teams including those that propose forms revisions and IRAdirect® changes.

Before joining Ascensus in 2009, Chad worked for CUNA Mutual Group for 8 years as a training consultant. Prior to 2001, Chad gained six years of experience as a trainer and manager as part of the world’s largest independent computer training company.  His responsibilities included training on a wide variety of software applications as well as sales training and operational management for a learning center.

Chad holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Carroll University.  He is a member of the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) and has earned the designation Certified IRA Specialist (CIS) with Ascensus and Certified IRA Professional (CIP) through Ascensus and the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU).
