Breakfast Briefing: Payment Strategies for Serving the Underbanked and Non-Traditional Member
March 9, 2017
9:00 am – 11:30 am

Session Overview
As credit unions, we are dedicated to serving the communities around us. That means we serve the entire community. It’s our mission to benefit and improve the lives of all our members, including those overlooked by traditional banks and financial institutions. The credit union difference is we find solutions. We don’t simply overlook anyone because they’re “underbanked.”

There are consumers that, for whatever reason, do not have traditional deposit accounts. For some they cannot meet minimum deposit requirements, while others have non-traditional employment. For example, the Las Vegas UP Employees Federal Credit Union, where roughly 80% of their membership is comprised of Union Pacific Railroad employees.  Many of those employees travel constantly, and had to rely on money orders or live a cash-only existence, which is getting harder to do in the digital age.

The credit union wanted a way to serve the needs of these employees as well. In this instance, the solution was offering a VISA Prepaid Debit card program. With a prepaid card, these “non-traditional” members now have the convenience of a VISA debit card for purchases, free bill payment, and access to cash at ATMs anytime, anywhere.
