About the MD|DC CUA Friend of Credit Unions endorsement process
The process by which the Maryland and District of Columbia Credit Union Association (MD|DC CUA) grants Friend of Credit Unions status is rigorous. It is MD|DC CUA's policy to support candidates, regardless of party affiliation, who have maintained a positive relationship with credit unions by working on behalf of their members or candidates whose policies and platforms will allow them to support credit unions' political, legislative, and regulatory goals.
MD|DC CUA will confer Friend of Credit Unions status on one candidate per congressional, senatorial, statewide, citywide, and local elections who have demonstrated a willingness to protect, promote and advocate for a positive legislative and regulatory environment for credit unions. Friend of Credit Unions designations are issued for the current election cycle only, are revocable at any time, and may be granted to candidates during party primaries. Previously endorsed or recognized candidates must have the designation re-applied to them for each subsequent election.
It is the policy of MD|DC CUA that candidates receiving Friend of Credit Unions status may receive encouragement for their candidacy from MD|DC CUA which can take variety of forms, including, but not limited, to a written statement or press release on MD|DC CUA letterhead which may be reprinted and re-published by MD|DC CUA member credit unions, the candidate themselves, or an announcement on the website, etc. MD|DC CUA Friend of Credit Unions status and associated use of that status by a candidate may only be portrayed in a positive manner.
In regards to federal elections, once the Board of Directors has designated a candidate Friend of Credit Unions, MD|DC CUA will make a formal written recommendation to the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) political staff. MD|DC CUA will provide information and insights to the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) regarding federal elections in Maryland and the District of Columbia. Candidate contributions are made from CULAC.
In regards to state and local elections, once the Board of Directors has designated a candidate Friend of Credit Unions, MD|DC CUA may make a financial contribution to candidate's political campaign.
