NCUA Chairman John Crews Outlines Priorities During Meeting at Congressional Caucus

The Association and credit union CEOs joined a meeting with NCUA Chairman John Crews hosted by The League of Credit Unions & Affiliates, where Crews outlined his priorities for the agency and emphasized his commitment to regulatory clarity, continued deregulation and close engagement with the credit union system.

Crews said his priorities as chairman include expanding access to financial services, maintaining efficient and effective risk-based supervision, supporting de novo credit unions, and ensuring the NCUA is prepared for technological innovation across the credit union system.

He also encouraged credit unions, many of which were gathered for Congressional Caucus, to continue sharing their stories and experiences. Real-world examples, he said, help demonstrate how regulatory decisions affect credit unions, members and communities.

Crews committed to continuing the NCUA’s Deregulation Project, noting that more work remains to identify regulations that are obsolete, duplicative or overly burdensome.

He also called for supervision that is tailored to individual credit unions and their risk profiles, rather than relying on a “check-the-box” approach.

As the NCUA continues its organizational transition and operates with a leaner structure, Crews said the agency will focus its resources where they are most needed while preserving its core safety and soundness responsibilities.
