Maryland employers can now register for the state’s Family and Medical Leave Insurance (FAMLI) program, and credit unions with at least one Maryland-based employee should begin preparing now for upcoming compliance requirements.

FAMLI will provide eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of job-protected, paid leave for qualifying family, medical, and military-related needs. Benefits are scheduled to begin in January 2028, with partial wage replacement of up to $1,000 per week.

Employers may participate in Maryland’s State Plan or apply to provide an approved private plan. Under the State Plan, contributions will be funded by employers and employees, with employers permitted to withhold up to half of the contribution rate from employees through payroll deductions.

Employers with fewer than 15 employees will be exempt from paying the employer portion of the contribution under the program’s small employer discount.

• Determine whether your credit union will participate in the State Plan or pursue a private plan.
• Review payroll systems and employee communications in advance of required deductions.
• Attend the next Intro to FAMLI webinar on September 16 from 9:30–11:00 a.m.
• Prepare to begin employee payroll withholding with the first pay period in January 2027.
• Plan for the first quarterly contribution payment due April 30, 2027.
• Update leave policies and internal procedures before benefits become available in January 2028.
