NCUA Board Briefed on AI, CLF, Ombudsman Report
The full NCUA Board convened late last week to receive briefings on several key issues, including the expanding role of artificial intelligence (AI), insights from the Office of the Ombudsman’s post-exam survey results, and recent developments involving the Central Liquidity Facility (CLF).
Artificial Intelligence Briefing
The Board received an in-depth briefing on artificial intelligence with the discussion covering AI use cases within the credit union system, resources available on the NCUA’s new AI resource page, and how the technology may support the agency’s internal operations.
The briefing also included insights from the May 2025 U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, which recommended that NCUA update its model risk management guidance. Upon reviewing its current policies, the agency concluded that focusing exclusively on model risk would not adequately address the range of AI use cases across the credit union industry. The NCUA emphasized that any new requirements would need to be developed through a formal rulemaking process.
Ombudsman Update: Post-Exam Survey Results
NCUA’s Ombudsman presented the results of the most recent post-exam survey, which captured examiner and credit union feedback from 2024. The data offered insights into exam processes, communication effectiveness, and areas for improvement.
Central Liquidity Facility Update
The quarterly update on the CLF’s operations covered second quarter 2025 highlights, including trends in membership, performance of the investment portfolio, budgetary and operational metrics, and short-term strategic objectives. The CLF continues to play a vital role in supporting credit union stability and resilience.
