Concerns Raised Over New Maryland Land Records Website Fee
A new Maryland Land Records (MDLR) website that is expected to launch as early as May 30, will introduce a new fee that is raising concerns for credit unions. The new 20-cents per page fee to view or download land records will significantly drive-up costs for credit union members who are purchasing or refinancing property in the state.
While monthly subscription rates are being offered, access is limited to Maryland Small Business Reserve members. To better understand the potential impact and advocate for affiliated credit unions, the MD|DC Credit Union Association is actively engaged in discussions with both the State Archives and the Administration to explore options for potential relief, including the expansion of subscription eligibility.
In response to concerns raised by the Association, The Maryland State Archives explained in a letter that the new fee model is intended to provide a sustainable funding source to maintain a modern website.
To help track usage for budgeting purposes, the Archives recommends that credit unions request a report of the number of pages accessed over the past four months from msa.helpdesk@maryland.gov.
The Association will continue to monitor this issue closely and advocate for credit unions.
