Activation Alert to Support Credit Union Tax Status

As Congress begins work on tax legislation, America’s Credit Unions has issued an action alert in support of the credit union tax status.

Why Now?
This comes as congressional leaders begin work on tax legislation. According to Politico, Republicans on the House Ways and Means Committee met Monday with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to evaluate a broad set of tax options. Meantime, their counterparts in the Senate Finance Committee gathered Monday evening to plan a way forward. House Republicans hope to have a tax bill on President Trump’s desk by Memorial Day, while Sen. Thom Tillis told Politico that the goal is to complete work by around August, though finishing sooner would be preferable.

What Should We Do?
The MD|DC Credit Union Association encourages credit unions to engage their Board Members, management, and staff in this grassroots effort. While some credit unions may feel comfortable involving members at this stage, this is expected to be a long-term initiative.

In Maryland, DC, and Delaware, there is strong support among the members of our Congressional delegation for preserving the credit union tax status. For now, we recommend that advocacy efforts be led by credit unions themselves, with a broader strategy shift if, and when a critical trigger point arises.

How to Activate
America’s Credit Union has updated it’s Don’t Tax My Credit Union website, which includes Voter Voice, a tool to reach out to members of Congress.

You can submit a pre-written message and/or add your own story.

The Association is developing a toolkit for credit unions to help engage members in the future, when appropriate.
