DC Marks Two Significant Milestones
Last week, the District marked two significant milestones, 50 years of Home Rule alongside the inauguration of newly elected and re-elected members of the DC Council for its 26th legislative session. Former mayors, councilmembers, and DC representatives in Congress gathered for a commemorative group photo to mark the historic occasion.

The members sworn in for the 26th Council session included:
- Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto
- Ward 4 Councilmember Janeese Lewis George
- Ward 7 Councilmember Wendell Felder
- Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White, Sr.
- At-Large Councilmember Christina Henderson
- At-Large Councilmember Robert C. White, Jr.
Mayor Muriel Bowser also took the oath of office, beginning her third term as the city’s leader.
Fifty years ago, Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall presided over the swearing-in of the District’s first Home Rule Mayor, Walter E. Washington, and its inaugural Home Rule Council—marking the beginning of a new era in self-governance for the city.
As the new Council session begins, the Association’s advocacy team will keep a close eye on legislative developments, ensuring credit unions stay informed about any proposed bill that may impact them.
