Association’s Baltimore Chapter Hosts Annual Meeting

Over 50 credit union professionals gathered for the Baltimore Chapter’s annual meeting last night. Attendees had the opportunity to network with their colleagues and hear an update on the state of the credit union industry.

Chapter Chair Toby Smith, Chief Lending Officer at SECU, kicked off the meeting by welcoming everyone and confirming chapter board members for the upcoming year, before introducing John Bratsakis, President/ CEO of the MD|DC Credit Union Association, for a look at the state of the credit union industry.

Bratsakis assured the group that the state of the industry is strong, with over a third of consumers nationwide belonging to credit unions. He spoke about the importance of credit unions having their voice heard by lawmakers on important industry issues such as the proposed Credit Card Competition Act. He also emphasized that each credit union needs to feel comfortable telling their own story about how they uniquely serve their members, particularly on issues like overdraft.

Before wrapping up for the evening, Leigh Philibosian, Director of the Credit Union Foundation MD|DC and Executive Director of Credit Union Miracle Day, thanked the group for helping make the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Race such a success. She also reminded members to apply for training grants to subsidize professional development, as well as community outreach grants through the Vizo Financial Empowerment Financial Grants.
