Association Hosts Town Hall with NCUA Board Member Otsuka

Over 35 credit union leaders from the Maryland and DC area had their first opportunity to engage with NCUA Board Member Tanya Otsuka during a town hall hosted by the MD|DC Credit Union Association. Otsuka was sworn in earlier this year and is the newest member of the Board.

Otsuka shared that her work at the NCUA will be guided by a commitment to a safe and sound financial system of cooperative credit that ensures members benefit from fair and affordable products and services. She attributes the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the spring 2023 bank failures as having left a lasting impression on her. Otsuka responded to questions from credit union leaders, providing her perspective as a regulator on key challenges confronting credit unions, including overdraft.

“We appreciate Board Member Otsuka taking the time to meet with out credit unions and engage in an open discussion,” said John Bratsakis, President/CEO, MD|DC Credit Union Association. “The town hall provided credit unions with the opportunity to share their challenges and perspective on issues impacting their members and operations directly with the NCUA.”

Otsuka also toured APL Federal Credit Union in Laurel, MD, where she had the opportunity to meet with members of both the frontline and executive teams to discuss the credit union’s community-driven initiatives and member-focused programs.
