Association Supports Draft Financial Literacy Standards in DC Schools

The MD|DC Credit Union Association voiced strong support of proposed financial literacy standards for DC public high school students. Developed by the DC Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE), the comprehensive standards cover crucial areas like income, budgeting, saving, investing, credit, and risk management.

In a letter to the OSSE, Association President/CEO John Bratsakis expressed support stating, “These draft standards are critical for shaping financially literate, responsible, and empowered future citizens. Focusing on practical applications, such as budgeting, understanding credit, and evaluating insurance options, is essential. These are vital skills that will enable students to make informed financial decisions and navigate the complexities of the modern economy.”

In January, OSSE will collaborate with educators and experts to refine the standards based on public feedback. Implementation is expected for the 2024-25 school year.
