Maryland Office of the Commissioner of Financial Regulation Welcomes New Assistant Commissioner

Shereefat Balogun has been named the Assistant Commissioner for Non-Depository Supervision.

Balogun is an attorney with over 12 years of experience working in the financial services industry, advising clients in private practice, government, and in-house. She most recently served as Chief Legal and Compliance Counsel at SECU. As SECU’s first in-house counsel, Balogun was responsible for overseeing and managing all of SECU’s legal and compliance matters and providing counsel on a variety of matters including litigation, contract review and negotiations, regulatory affairs and risk management functions. She also played a critical role in developing SECU’s DEI strategy and program, including helping to create and serve on its DEI Council. Prior to that, she served as Regulatory Counsel with the National Association of Federally-Insured Credit Unions (NAFCU) and also worked as Attorney Advisor at the Federal Housing Finance Agency, Office of Inspector General. Shereefat started her legal career as a litigator at a national law firm in the financial services group.

As Assistant Commissioner, Balogun will be responsible for, among other things, managing the Office’s non-depository licensing, regulatory, supervisory, and enforcement responsibilities, as well as providing policy, strategy, and management support and advice to the Commissioner.

Balogun received a Juris Doctor degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo Law School and a Bachelor of Arts degree from SUNY at Buffalo. She is licensed to practice law in New York and Illinois.
