Association Backs DC’s Electronic Notarization Bill
In a letter to the DC Council, the MD|DC Credit Union Association supports legislation to authorize remote online notarization.
The bill would amend the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts of 2018 to authorize remote online notarization both by the use of secure electronic records and remote ink notarization using audio-visual recording and identity-proofing technology.
The letter urges council members to support B24-0457 because “…it creates a secure and replicable framework for notarizations to take place, without requiring the parties to meet in person. There are several reasons that remote online notarization may be necessary, and with today’s technology there is no reason the District shouldn’t allow for such a service.”
The Council is scheduled to begin marking up the bill this week.
Maryland and Virginia already have permanent laws permitting remote notarization.
