Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award
The Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award recognizes leadership within the credit
union movement on behalf of youth financial literacy. It
considers all activities supporting the personal finance
education of young members and nonmembers, including but not
limited to, face-to-face teaching, publicity, lobbying for
curriculum requirements, teacher and volunteer training, and
promotion and use of the National Endowment for Financial
Education (NEFE) High School Financial Planning Program.

To enter
CUNA’s recognition programs, complete the attached entry
forms and checklists, include a $40 entry fee for
each entry and send to:

The Deadline for Entries to be submitted to the MDDCCUA
office is 5:00 p.m.,
Friday,
April 11, 2008. Award
winners will be notified at the end of April and invited to
an Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, in Columbia.
Winning entries will then be on display during MDDCCUA's 3rd
Convention in Ocean City and recognized in the Annual
Meeting Program on Saturday, June 14, 2008.
Purpose
The Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award recognizes
leadership within the credit union movement on behalf of
youth financial literacy. It considers all activities
supporting the personal finance education of young members
and nonmembers, including, but not limited to, face-to-face
teaching, publicity, lobbying for curriculum requirements,
teacher and volunteer training, and promotion and use of the
National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) High
School Financial Planning Program (HSFPP).
Procedure
Each Association will select winners from each of the
following categories:
1.) Less than $20 million
2.) $20 - $80 million
3.) $80 - $200 million
4.) More than $200 million
Credit unions will submit their completed entry form,
checklist, and evidentiary materials in a three-ring binder
or spiral-bound notebook to MDDCCUA by Monday, March 31,
2008.
Winners receive awards from their Association, with the first
place winner in each category advancing to the national
competition. CUNA will select winners from each category and
present the awards at its Government Affairs Conference in
February 2009.

a.) Inform
teachers and school officials, credit union people, elected
officials, the press, and the public about the problem of
youth financial illiteracy.
b.) Persuade schools to incorporate personal
finance instruction.
c.) Assist
in the training of teachers and/or classroom volunteers to
teach personal finance to youth.
3.) Describe your credit unions efforts, with evidence of
results, to: (25 points max)
a.) Teach young people about personal
finance and related topics in or out of school.
b.) Assist young people in developing a savings habit
through programs or events.
4.)
Describe your credit union’s efforts, with evidence of
results, to work with other organizations to provide youth
financial education leadership. (20 points max)
Note
on Criterion #5: This criterion is OPTIONAL because
legislative and/or regulatory youth
financial education initiatives are not an annual
occurrence in every state. Associations that enter
according to criteria 1 through 4 will be rated on an
80-point scale. Associations that enter according
to
criteria 1 through 4 plus 5 will be rated on a 100-point
scale.
The
National Desjardins Award in any given category will go
to the entry that receives the
highest percentage score among those awarded an average
among judges of at least 64 points
(80%
of maximum) on the 80-point scale or at least 80 points
(80% of maximum) on the
100-point five-criteria scale.
5.) Describe your
credit union’s efforts, with evidence of results, to build
grassroots support for (20 points max.)
a.)
Administrative policy or curricular changes at the state and
district levels to improve the financial education of youth.
b.) Legislative action to improve the
financial education of youth.
